Using the Latest Tech to Stop Porch Pirates

It seems like every month there’s an uptick in package theft from people’s front porches and front lawns.  There have been several instances recently in the Dallas area where thieves have boldly been seen not only taking packages but checking people’s doors to see if they’re unlocked.

You can’t be everywhere all the time, and you can’t always have both eyes glued to your front door, so how do you guarantee that your packages, or your home, won’t be burgled?  There are several new ways to protect your home that are almost as good (but not quite as good) as having our Eagle Protective Service Officers patrolling your neighborhood.

Arlo Essential Spotlight Camera – This 1080p hi definition camera can be paired with others around your home to provide a 360-degree view of your property during the day or at night using the color night vision option. You can use this with your Alexa enabled devices like the Echo Show to remotely view and monitor activity. Crystal clear sound and picture isn’t the only thing you’re get with this device, but this Arlo camera will send you notifications, allow you to activate a siren to ward off potential threats, and even call a friend or emergency services using the Arlo Secure service.

LOCKLY Vision Deadbolt with Video Doorbell Edition Smart Lock – LOCKLY has a range of smart door lock solutions for whatever style you need. The higher end models feature biometric fingerprint scanners, a camera, and a deadbolt that can be remotely accessed via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi using a custom pin. You can even create guest pins if you are having people over your house or using your home in an Air B&B arrangement. The camera placement on this lock is perfect to spot package thieves sneaking up to take your things.

BenchSentry by Genie Secure Package Delivery Porch Box for Outdoor Storage – Sometimes the smartest ways are the simplest. This weatherproof large locking mailbox stores your packages away from prying eyes and removes the temptation for someone to just saunter up and steal something off your porch. This box can be used with your smartphone and will automatically lock once your package has been delivered. The only drawback of this item is that it does require access to an available AC outlet for power, but theoretically could be remotely powered on a case-by-case basis with an external battery that could be tucked away or secreted somewhere close to the box.

SimpliSafe 8 Piece Wireless Home Security System – Optional 24/7 Professional Monitoring – This fairly plug and play system is compatible with your Alexa and Google Assistant devices and doesn’t even require a contract to use. It includes a panic button that triggers the alarm and instantly contacts police dispatch. It also includes four entry sensors that you can attach to your doors and windows (you can get more to cover your entire home) and a motion sensor that you can put next to your door or in an area most likely to catch an intruder.

All these smart devices are great ways to protect your home.  They might not be a substitute for our trained security professionals at Eagle Protective Group, but they should all help deter or undermine attempts to steal your property or enter your house while you’re away.
